Recipe: Perfect Poondu Rasam

Delicious, fresh and tasty.

Poondu Rasam. Garlic rasam also known as poondu rasam is a spicy, sour rasam tempered with garlic and spices. I make rasam on a regular basis and in this rainy cold weather, I prepare rasam often. Since rasam is good for cough and cold.

Poondu Rasam Not in eeya chatti but in an everyday steel vessel. I adapted this recipe from a Coimbatore cookbook called "simply homemade" by Jayanthi Manohar. The book has recipes from the kongunad region. You can have Poondu Rasam using 14 ingredients and 6 steps. Here is how you cook that.

Ingredients of Poondu Rasam

  1. Prepare 1/4 cup of tuar dal.
  2. You need 1 of ripe tomato finely chopped.
  3. You need 1/4 cup of fresh coriander leaves (make bundle with it's stalk).
  4. It's 1 tsp of ghee.
  5. It's 1 tsp of cumin seeds powder.
  6. It's 2 of green chillies.
  7. It's 2 tsp of Curry leaves.
  8. Prepare 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder.
  9. You need 2 tsp of rasam masala powder.
  10. It's 1 tsp of red chilli powder.
  11. Prepare 1 tbsp of aamchur(dry mango powder).
  12. You need 1 tsp of dhania jeera(coriander cumin) powder.
  13. Prepare to taste of Salt.
  14. You need 2 tsp of Finely chopped fresh coriander leaves to garnish.

We will need to make "Jillakara Mirel" powder for this rasam. Its nothing but cumin and pepper. Poondu Rasam recipe is always served after sambhar or kuzhambu in South Indian meal and nowadays it is served as starter drink in many top restaurants as it is a good appetizer. People in South India have a habit of drinking it in between meals and it is a popular digestive dish in the non vegetarian menu.

Poondu Rasam step by step

  1. Wash and soak tur dal. Pressure cook with more water for 5-6 whistles..
  2. In kadhai add heat ghee. Add and saute cummin seeds, chopped green chillies, garlic cloves for few seconds..
  3. Add chopped tomato, turmeric powder,red chilli powder and rasam powder,mix well. Add aamchur powder and dhania jeera powder,mix well..
  4. Add salt, coriander leaves bundle and 2 cup of hot water. Boil till half of mixture remains. Remove coriander bundle from it..
  5. Add cooked tur dal water (only) in it and boil for few minutes..
  6. Serve/ Relish Delicious Hot Poondu Rasam garnishing with finely chopped fresh coriander leaves..
