As I am a vegetarian, I tried this dish with curd. Normally we have heard Hyderabadi biryani, Veg Biryani, Chicken biryani etc… but Kappa Biryani also makes a complete & heavy meal. Ingredients: Tapioca is still a staple food in many parts of Kerala. You can have Malabar Tapioca Upma using 12 ingredients and 5 steps. Here is how you achieve it.
Ingredients of Malabar Tapioca Upma
- It's 500 gms of peeled and cubed fresh/frozen Tapioca.
- Prepare 1 tsp of cumin seed.
- It's 1 tsp of split chickpea/chana dal.
- It's 1 tsp of split blackgram Lentils/urad dal.
- You need 2-3 of Green chillies.
- You need 1 sprig of curry leaves.
- Prepare 1/4 tsp of turmeric powder.
- You need 2 tbsp of grated coconut.
- Prepare 2 tbsp of coconut oil.
- You need 1 pinch of asafoetida.
- You need 1 tsp of lemon juice.
- You need to taste of Salt.
There are so many dishes available in Kerala with tapioca such as kappa mathi curry (Tapioca with sardines), Kerala kappa masala, Kappa thalichath, kappa upma and so on. Among these dishes, the combination of tapioca with beef or with fish is widely popular. Tapioca Upma Kappa / Cheeni ( Tapioca ) is a tubular , rich in carbohydrate omnipresent in Kerala. If fresh, a cut section of Kappa will look moist and fully white.
Malabar Tapioca Upma step by step
- In a pressure cooker take Tapioca pieces, salt, turmeric and enough water to pressure cook till 3 whistles..
- Drain, mash it lightly and keep aside..
- In a pan heat up coconut oil, add mustard seeds, asafoetida, chana and urad dal, fry for 30 seconds then add green chillies and curry leaves..
- After half a minute add boiled tapioca, Cook until everything is mixed well. Add grated coconut and lemon juice just before switching off the flame..
- Serve hot..
