Upma, uppumavu or uppittu is a dish originating from the Indian subcontinent, most common in South Indian, Maharashtrian, Odia and Sri Lankan Tamil breakfast, cooked as a thick porridge from dry-roasted semolina or coarse rice flour. Various seasonings and/or vegetables are often added during the cooking, depending on individual preferences.
It is a traditional South Indian breakfast dish made from rava. A quick vegan breakfast dish, Rava is also called as suji in Hindi and cream of wheat in English. Ingredients of Upma
- It's 1 cup of sooji/rava.
- Prepare 1/2 cup of chopped onion.
- It's 1 teaspoon of urad dal.
- Prepare 1 teaspoon of mustard seeds.
- It's 2-3 of green chillies chopped.
- It's 3-4 of curry leaves.
- It's as required of chopped coriander leaves.
- Prepare as per taste of Dry red chilli whole.
- You need as required of Water.
- You need as per taste of Salt.
- It's as required of Oil.
Upma is an Indian translation for Savory Porridge. It can be made using variety of ingredients like Sooji, Vermicelli, Beaten rice or poha, or broken wheat or dalia. Lots of veggies are added to it for a nice crunch and they also make this dish perfect to serve for breakfast or a snack. In Andhra they call this upma 'Bombay rava' upma.
Upma instructions
- Take a kadhai, heat oil on a medium flame. Add mustard seeds,curry leaves,green and red chillies,urad dal and saute well..
- Add rawa/sooji.Mix properly.also add salt to it. Mix. Let it roast well on medium flame. Keep stirring..
- Meanwhile keep boiled water ready..
- Once the rawa is roasted well,add the boiled water in steps and stir continuously to avoid lumps. The more the water the softer it'll be. So add water as desired..
- Once you get the desired consistency, sprinkle coriander leaves.Serve it with hot chai or coffee with bhujia on the side!!.
It is extremely soft and spongy in texture. When I was a kid, I loved eating this upma as balls rolled in sugar. This upma makes an excellent accompaniment to pesarattu.
