How to Make Delicious Upma

Upma, uppumavu or uppittu is a dish originating from the Indian subcontinent, most common in South Indian, Maharashtrian, Odia and Sri Lankan Tamil breakfast, cooked as a thick porridge from dry-roasted semolina or coarse rice flour. Various seasonings and/or vegetables are often added during the cooking, depending on individual preferences.

Upma It is a traditional South Indian breakfast dish made from rava. A quick vegan breakfast dish, Rava is also called as suji in Hindi and cream of wheat in English. It's also called Rava Upma or Sooji Upma and is a quick preparation using common ingredients. You can have Upma using 9 ingredients and 10 steps. Here is how you cook it.

Ingredients of Upma

  1. It's 1 tsp of Avalu/mustard seeds.
  2. Prepare 1 small glass of upma rava.
  3. Prepare 2.5 glasses of water.
  4. It's 1 of Onion.
  5. It's 1 of Tomato.
  6. It's 1 of Mirchi/green chillies.
  7. You need handful of Peanuts.
  8. You need few of Karivepaku/curry leaves.
  9. Prepare 2 tsp of oil.

In Andhra they call this upma 'Bombay rava' upma. It is extremely soft and spongy in texture. When I was a kid, I loved eating this upma as balls rolled in sugar. This upma makes an excellent accompaniment to pesarattu.

Upma step by step

  1. Cut & ready the ingredients.
  2. 2 spoons oil on pan, with high flame.
  3. Add all ingredients execpt tomato mirchi in pan. Let it fry.
  4. Take 1 small glass upma rava.
  5. Add tomato & mirchi.
  6. Add 2.5 small glasses of water. Let it boil on high flame.
  7. Reduce flame and add upma rava into pan & stir thoroughly on high flame.
  8. Keep a plate on it, and let it cook on low flame for 10-15 mins..
  9. Before last 5 mins, open the plate and stir upma except for the bottom layer.
  10. After switching off stove, keep the pan intact for 5 mins to let it settle (for maadu).
